On July 10, Rossen Milanov returns to upstate New York to lead the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra in its summer home at the Chautauqua Institution. The concert begins with the overture to Thomas Adès’s opera The Tempest, followed by Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G with soloist Di Wu. The program concludes with Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances.
A favorite conductor at the Institution, Rossen earned acclaim last year for two concerts with the CSO. “On the journey to transcendence, Milanov touched on emotional benchmarks, conveying ample doses of heroic pride, wistful romanticism, and raw fear of death,” wrote The Chautauquan Daily. “In this, dynamic contrast proved the conductor’s most vital tool, allowing him to accentuate the difference between elation and terror.”
